International Summer School Program on Climate Change and Related Risks
2025 Session: Human Activity and Weather/Climate Extremes
The 2025 International Summer School Program on Climate Change and Related Risks will be held at Fudan University’s Jiangwan campus from June 29 to July 18, focusing on Human Activity and Weather/Climate Extremes. Scientific evidence overwhelmingly demonstrates that human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels and large-scale land-use changes, have significantly altered the Earth’s climate system. It is unequivocal that human influence has warmed the atmosphere, ocean and land. For the year 2024, the global average temperature had already reached about 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels, setting a new record. The intensification of extreme weather and climate events is a direct consequence of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, leading to shifts in atmospheric circulation, oceanic patterns, and hydrological cycles. The increased frequency and intensity of weather/climate extremes—such as heatwaves, heavy precipitation, droughts, and tropical cyclones— pose grave risks to our society. Understanding the complex interactions between human activity, climate change, and extreme weather events is of paramount importance for developing effective mitigation and adaptation strategies.
Several internationally renowned scholars at the forefront of their fields and with extensive teaching experience have been invited to lecture at the summer school. A few outstanding young scholars will also be invited to share the cutting-edge research findings in the related fields. Four modules are structured: (a) Weather/climate extremes under global warming, (b) Impact of human activity, including anthropogenic greenhouse gases and aerosols, urbanization, land-use change, (c) Impact of interactions among land, ocean and atmosphere under global warming, (d) Risks interconnectivity, mitigation and adaptation. The teaching language will be English.
The summer school will select and invite 100-200 students, postdocs and early-career young professionals from applicants worldwide. Alongside lectures, interactive discussions and group mini-project assignments will be organized to foster networking among participants. Distinguished groups will receive cash awards for their outstanding performance on mini-project assignments.
Additionally, participants may have the opportunity to share their research on the 3rd Fudan International Workshop on Atmospheric Sciences Frontiers during the summer school period. Summer school participants will be given priority consideration for oral presentations. Those interested should indicate their preference in the application and submit an abstract for consideration.
1. Applicant Requirements
The summer school welcomes applications from students, postdoctoral researchers, and young scholars who have received their Ph.D. degree within the past 5 years in atmospheric sciences, environmental sciences, climate governance, or relevant fields. Applicants from all countries are encouraged to apply. Proficiency in English is a prerequisite for participation.
2. Tuitions & Fees
The summer school does not charge tuition fees.
Participants are responsible for covering their own transportation, health insurance, accommodation, and living expenses during the summer school.
3. Funding Opportunities
a) Travel support: A limited number of scholarships are available for international participants to support their economy-class international travel to Shanghai. Priority will be given to students from developing countries with outstanding academic performance, whose research aligns closely with the summer school’s theme, and those who apply early.
b) Living allowance support: A limited number of CSC scholarships are available for non-Chinese international participants as partial support for their living expenses during the summer school. The scholarship amount will be around 1,500 yuan, subjected to the final decision of CSC. Recipients of other CSC scholarships are not eligible for this funding. Scholarships will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
c) No scholarship is available to support local accommodation.
4. Application Procedure
